SALMON AND DEER FARM

Montrose is involved in an enhancement project together with New Zealand Fish and Game to protect the native salmon. They are born in Blackford stream, which is formed from the springs on Montrose and runs into the Rakaia River. After 3 years at sea, the salmon return to the place where there where born and get ready to spawn into the stream. It is magic to see them turn up the stream and follow there instincts; often just a meter away you can watch them in there natural environment. At the hatchery, we breed 100,000 salmon annually which are released into the Rakaia River and surrounding alpine lakes. We would be delighted to show you around and tell you all about the project.

The lake in front of your chalet is filled with fish. Watch them jump to catch insects and maybe try some fly fishing to hook the occasional brown trout or salmon which we can later prepare for you. On its river flats, Montrose has a deer breeding station. In December the hinds give birth to their fawns. In autumn you can watch the impressive stags wandering in the hills around and hear them roar in the distance with there large and impressive antlers. Montrose has part of its land deer fenced but a large piece is kept just as wild nature and it is all yours to explore with many distinctive nature flora and fauna.
