Montrose is involved in an enhancement project together with New Zealand Fish and Game to protect the
native salmon. They are born in Blackford stream, which is formed from the springs on Montrose and runs
into the Rakaia River. After 3 years at sea, the salmon return to the place where there where born and
get ready to spawn into the stream. It is magic to see them turn up the stream and follow there
instincts; often just a meter away you can watch them in there natural environment. At the hatchery,
we breed 100,000 salmon annually which are released into the Rakaia River and surrounding alpine lakes.
We would be delighted to show you around and tell you all about the project.
